Travel along the Gibb River road

Spanning a length of some 660 kms between Derby and the junction of the Great Northern Highway between Kununurra and Wyndham, this ancient trading route traverses some of the most remote areas in the world, providing a true outback experience for the intrepid traveller. Like the road conditions, which vary from sealed to 'rocky', the scenery alters dramatically - from dusty desert to plunging waterfall; from cavernous gorge to spectacular rocky outcrop - and a refreshing swim in a secluded pool is never far away. Dotted along 'The Gibb' as it is locally known, are a number of comfortable stations and wilderness camps, which tie in nicely with either a self-drive option or a small group tour through this region; though it is important to note that whilst there are certain regions where you can risk travel during the wet season, this is not one of those. The recommended time to travel is between April and October, before the wet-season makes certain tracks inaccessible.
