Humpback whales sheltering in Aussie cove: 13-08-2008

Nearly 600 humpback whales have been seen sheltering on Australia's west coast in a cove in the warm waters of Camden Sound.
The cove is home to many shrimp and squid and due to the fact that it is a natural amphitheatre it is the perfect setting for the whales' sonar to reverberate.
The whales were discovered by the Marine Science Institution and Steve Blake, chief executive, said that it was a "natural maternity ward" for them.
Speaking to ABC, he said it was a place where mothers were able to teach their calves some life skills including feeding and how to use tides and currents.
"The most spectacular thing I saw was a calf practicing breaching as if it was an adult - just like a kid would do at a playground," he explained.
The humpback whale is listed as a vulnerable species by the Australian government.
