Peel campsite threatened with freight corridor: 17-09-2008

Australia could be set to lose its 'only window of the first few months of European settlement' in the country.
The site where Thomas Peel and 120 other settlers from the Gilmore set up camp in 1829 could be bulldozed to make way for a new road and railway, which will run through Beeliar Regional Park.
National Trust manager of heritage services Karl Haynes called for the plans to be re-drawn saying that they could destroy a major jewel in the crown of Western Australia (WA).
"I would consider it potentially one of the most significant sites in WA in regards to European heritage," Mr Haynes said.
He also called for the Heritage Council to protect the site permanently by placing it on the Heritage Register.
Travellers in WA can visit Beeliar Regional Park, which runs parallel to the coast through Melville, Cockburn and Kwinana.
Comprising of two chains of wetlands, the park's 19 lakes are home to numerous species of wildlife.
