Archaeologists call on locals to help solve mystery of ditch: 22-11-2007

Archaeologists have made a number of surprising discoveries in New Zealand, the likes of which have never been seen before in the country.
The experts have been uncovering a number of ancient ditches while working on the Bell Block bypass route near Taranaki and have been unable to find an explanation for the ditches, Taranaki Daily News reports.
Along with typical discoveries such as pieces of china, the archaeologists have found a number of nine-metre square ditches which once had raised banks surrounding them and could have been used for keeping livestock.
However, the experts have no knowledge of the existence of such a site and as a result project manager Michael Taylor is calling on local residents to offer any help they can in uncovering the history of the area.
"It is not a simple history, a whole lot of things have happened in this paddock for some reason," Mr Taylor said.
Commenting on the project as a whole, Mr Taylor added: "We find a different set of information than what's in the history books, bits you wouldn't even think of."
