NZ sanctuary receives award: 18-08-2008

The Karori Sanctuary is one of New Zealand's leading conservation projects and it has won a prestigious award to recognise its efforts in helping endangered birds and other wildlife.
It won the DOC Conservation in Action Award at the New Zealand Tourism Industry Awards.
According to Nancy McIntosh-Ward, chief executive of the sanctuary, the award recognises achievements in making the sanctuary both a visitor attraction and a respected ecological project.
Found in Wellington, the complex is home to a number of endangered native birds and other wildlife and a new centre to educate travellers is expected to be opened in the next two years.
It is hoped that the centre will boost the development of New Zealand's tourism industry as well as the number of people visiting the sanctuary.
Birds including the Hihi, the little-spotted Kiwi and the Tui can all be found in the sanctuary along with the long-tailed bat.
