Most of Fiji’s islands are either sparsely inhabited or completely deserted, so this is the place to come for solitude and the joy of being far, far away from the rest of the world.

When Dutch explorer Abel Tasman first laid eyes on Fiji he must have thought he had glimpsed paradise. Jagged rainforest-clad peaks rising towards the sky are dramatically fringed by pearly white beaches and crystal clear sapphire seas.
But this spell-binding beauty concealed treacherous waterways and tales of ferocious cannibal warriors, leading to the name ‘The Cannibal Isles’ which for many years kept even intrepid travellers such as James Cook at bay. When the British finally settled they brought missionaries, who transformed traditional tribal culture into a more conservative way of life. Indentured labourers also came from India to work on cotton and sugar cane plantations.
Today, Fiji is a rich mix of many ethnicities, both indigenous and imported, and in contrast to their barbaric past, Fijians are now among some of the friendliest, most genuine people in the world. Of the 330 islands that make up the Fiji archipelago barely 100 are inhabited, so it is still possible to stumble across deserted beaches, discover tumbling waterfalls in the jungle, dive off pristine coral reefs and visit tiny local villages that still follow a traditional way of life.
The beauty of these islands is beguiling, but it is the unaffected warmth of the people that makes Fiji so memorable.
