Visit The South Pacific
Fiji’s second and third largest islands, Vanua Levu and Taveuni, offer the chance to explore remote traditional villages and cultures, lush mountainous interiors, pristine beaches and glorious coral reefs. Vanua Levu is a rugged island, once a centre for the copra trade but now clad in fields of sugar cane, surrounded by coral reefs. Although just 64km from Viti Levu it is much less visited, and offers the chance to observe local traditions and culture, relatively untarnished by tourism. Taveuni, formerly known as Somosomo, is the third-largest island in Fiji and is often thought to be the most beautiful. Volcanic in origin it rises along a backbone ridge to a height of more than 1,000 metres, with a high-altitude lake at its heart, pouring out water to the west. Every characteristic of Fijian scenery is found on Taveuni, lush with tropical trees, fruits and vegetables, as well as some excellent beaches and superb diving opportunities.
