Reasons To
Visit French Polynesia

  • Art & Crafts

Tahitian culture is more in evidence now that ever before and not just in the sophisticated dances and performance art but in the revival of symbolic tattoo art through which Polynesians use the dark strong colours to assert their ma'ohi identity.

Rangiroa was described by Jacques Cousteau as the richest aquarium on the planet matched only by the other great Tuamotu lagoons on Tikehau, Manihi and Fakarava; now one of UNESCO's most valued biospheres.

  • Pearls

One of the most successful uses of light is visible in the pearl industry in which French Polynesia has become a world leader. The most sought after pearls are from the farms on Taha'a an in the Tuamotus and you may even get a chance to see the incredibly rare black pearls.

Atuona Tour

  • Culture & History
  • Private Tour

Your driver guide will take you down the hill from the hotel to the main village of Atuona for a tour of the internationally famous museums to the works of Paul Gauguin and Jacques Brel. The 'Espace Culturel' surrounding a replica of Gauguin's Marquesian home is full of copies of the artist's most famous works together with film and written histories of his unusual life.

Next door to the Gauguin museum a cultural centre to the memory of the famous 1960's Belgian singer and poet, Jacques Brel, has been created by his Marquesian and international fans. In it you will find his plane and montages of his life and works accompanied by the sound of his music. The museums are atmospheric and although your guides are not allowed to take you around inside these are wonderfully moving and enlightening memorials to two fascinating men.

Afterwards, your guide will drive you up the hill to the Calvary cemetery where both men are buried to spend some time at their shrines.
