The backdrop of mountains is ever-present in this region best explored on foot, following wine trails into by-roads and valleys.
Of particular note is the Maitai River walkway on the southern side of the city. It is a wonderful 6km stroll which, once you have completed, you can reward yourself with dinner and local wine in one of Nelson’s excellent seafood restaurants.

North of Nelson is Collingwood, staging post for trips out onto the remote Farewell Spit, an internationally renowned bird sanctuary, best explored with the highly recommended Farewell Spit Safari Company that have been operating excursions here for more than 50 years.
