Our country specialists have travelled the length and breadth of Alaska - here are a few of their favourite things to do
Alaska is a land of innumerable glaciers, raging rivers, towering mountains, dense forests, endless tundra, countless islands and great tracts of Arctic coast. But it is so much more than this. It is a land of summer festivals, diverse cultural influences and fascinating history and architecture. Where else will you find Russian Orthodox churches rubbing shoulders with brightly-coloured Norwegian houses and 19th century gold rush towns?
Alaskan festivals
The USA’s largest state, it has a population of 683,000, greatly outnumbered by the caribou. Between May and September, visitors can join Alaskans in Petersburg’s ‘Little Norway Festival’ or Kodiak Island’s ‘Crab Festival’ or even the ‘Nalukataq Festival’ on Barrow’s Arctic shores.
Scenery and wildlife
The road system seamlessly links to Canada’s Yukon and lends itself to wonderful circular drives through awe-inspiring scenery. Many remote towns, villages and islands can often only be reached by ferry or cruise ship, giving them a mystique all of their own. Alaska offers some of the best bear watching in the world, while whale watching and fishing are often without peer.
The sheer scale of the landscape is rarely equalled anywhere in the world, but it is the friendliness of the Alaskans that makes a visit here a truly never to be forgotten experience.
