Poas Volcano & Waterfall Gardens
San José & Central Valley, Costa Rica
An early start this morning as you begin the drive out into the beautiful Central Valley of Costa Rica. You will move on to the Poas volcano, one of only four currently active volcanoes in Costa Rica.
Poas has blasted out three craters in its lifetime and due to constant activity the appearance of the crater changes regularly. It is currently 1500m wide and filled with a crystal blue sulphur pool that is an amazing sight - weather permitting! Although impressive, time spent at the crater edge will not be great due to sulphurous gases wafting around.
On returning to San Jose you stop off at the La Paz Waterfall Gardens. The park has 3.5 kilometres of paved trails leading to 5 magnificent waterfalls and spectacular gardens with information about the plants and their peculiarities. There is also a hummingbird garden that attracts 23 of the 57 species of hummingbirds found in Costa Rica. The birds have become incredibly tame so you can approach within inches. There are educational exhibits that describe in detail the behaviour and physical characteristics of these amazing creatures.
The butterfly observatory is a magnificent enclosure and the largest of its type in the world. In the on-site laboratory it is possible to see these insects as they develop through their lifecycle. There can be up to 4,000 butterflies in the observatory at any one time.
