Chichicastenango festival: 19-12-2007

Chichicastenango festival18401201December brings colourful excitement to Guatemala in the form of the Chichicastenango Festival of Saint Thomas.

Guatemalan Indians flock from all areas of the highlands to take part in the celebration of music and dance and other outlandish activities.

Many different cultural communities are represented at the event and there are over 100 dialects spoken as folk music, dance, art, and craft are all represented in this unique central American event.

National dress is a big part of the event and multiple colours are on display as images of the patron saint are paraded through the streets to the smell of incense from the church and the sounds of firecrackers, rockets, drums and brass bands.

The maypole tradition is also native to the festival and participants start from the top and unravel the rope that is tied around them as they make their descent.

Holidaymakers will also have the time to look around the market and appreciate the beautiful rugs and textiles on sale as well the plants and livestock and perhaps purchase a memoir to the vibrant event.
