A good time for whale spotting: 10-10-2008

Travellers in Mexico between November and April may be lucky enough to see one of the animal world's most spectacular migratory journeys.
Between these months, the Northern Pacific humpback whale population migrates to the Mexico Pacific to mate or give birth.
The humpback whales have fought back from the threat of extinction of late but, according to National Geographic, the species is not out of the proverbial water yet.
"Even though the Mexican oceanographic territory has been decreed a whale sanctuary, humpback whales continue to face various threats like fishing nets and boat traffic," Greenpeace's Alejandro Olivera told National Geographic.
"This could be reduced with public and political support."
The whales were hunted to the brink of extinction before a ban came into place in the 1960s, but Japan has been trying to buy the votes of poorer countries to help support its calls for the ban to be lifted.
Travellers in Mexico over the winter may even be able to catch a glimpse of the giant creatures from the shore, as they often come very close to the coast to mate.
