Animals blessed in Mexican mayhem: 15-01-2008

The Feast of San Antonio Abad certainly makes sure that all God's creatures are welcome in his church.
Taking place each January in Mexico, the event encompasses religion as well as a generous proportion of the country's animal population.
For the feast of Saint Anthony, the people of Mexico bring their pets to be blessed at the local church. The usual suspects - cats and dogs - are sure to be found, alongside some more exotic animals such as geckos. At the end of the service the bizarre collection of animals wait in the courtyard for the arrival of the priest who will bless them.
But the festival also has a wider meaning as the blessing is meant to ensure the health of the livestock, donkeys, and horses for the coming year.
The chaotic event begins early so visitors should hurry to make sure they catch the best of this unique occasion.
