Battle of Puebla remembered: 23-04-2008

Mexico is well known for its beautiful beaches and warm temperatures, but anyone visiting Puebla in May will also get a glimpse of the region's culture and history.
The Cinco de Mayo celebrations see the locals re-enact the battle of Puebla in 1862, in which the people of the town defeated the French. Although the Mexicans were underequipped and outnumbered, they managed to defeat the professional French army.
The battle occurred in the spring of 1862 when the French invaders aimed to take a large sum of money from the new government. However, the Mexicans defeated the French forces at Puebla and a day of celebration on May 5th now marks the occasion.
Locals dress up in French and Mexican soldier uniforms, including swords, and march in remembrance of the soldiers and the women who travelled with them to cook.
A mock battle then takes place before the Mexicans are declared the winners and the eating, drinking and revelry begins.
