Cancun wetlands to get protection: 31-03-2008

While Cancun may be better known for its picturesque white sandy beaches, a new initiative is hoping to attract wildlife lovers to its shores.
More than 9,884 acres of wetlands will be protected in the Mexican region in an attempt to ensure the region's eco-systems are preserved.
The Nichupte mangrove swamps are a visitor attraction for many people travelling to Cancun and offer a wide range of biodiversity.
"They stabilise the coastline and climatic conditions, control erosion and are a food source for wildlife," said Teresa Ramirez Almazan, representing the Mexican Environment and Natural Resources Secretariat.
The move follows Felipe Calderon's decision to preserve the Nichupte Lagoon and its wetlands as an area of strategic environmental importance.
All of which is good news for animal lovers and travellers visiting Mexico as it has some of the world's most diverse wildlife.
Ranging from exotic birds to tropical fish, there is bound to be something for everyone in the wetlands.
