Mexican wreck was laden with weapons: 04-11-2008

A ship found in the Gulf of Mexico was laden with a "large arsenal" of weapons and its crew were either intent on causing trouble or predicting trouble would find them, according to a leading nautical archaeologist.
Texas A&M University researcher Ben Ford explained that the Mardi Gras Wreck was laden with cannons and various other weapons when it sank some time between 1808 and 1820.
The unidentified wreck was discovered in 2002, but the weapons weren't discovered until last year, according to the Houston Chronicle.
"It's a fairly large arsenal," Mr Ford told the newspaper.
"They were either out for mischief or they were concerned about coming to some harm."
Archaeologists hope that the wreck could shed some light on the goings on in the Gulf of Mexico during the early 19th century.
Travellers in Mexico often explore the Mayan and Aztec ruins but the country offers a host of other activities such as snorkelling and scuba diving.
