Mexico gears up for Dia de los Muertos: 30-10-2008

With the UK getting set for Halloween, travellers in Mexico will be able to experience something slightly different this weekend.
Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead is actually a two-day holiday which takes place on November 1st and 2nd and is celebrated by Mexicans the world over.
The festival brings together family and friends to pray for departed loved ones and is celebrated in connection with the Catholic All Saints' and All Souls' days.
Celebrations include the building of altars and consumption of food and drink in honour of the departed.
The festival can be traced back to ancient times in Mexico when the Aztecs, Mayans and other indigenous peoples would have celebrated the deaths of their ancestors.
It is said in Mexico that the souls of the dead find it easier to contact the living during the celebrations, so travellers should beware of any bumps in the night.
