Radish festival is smashing event: 21-12-2007

Radishes form part of an unusual festival in the city of Oaxaca and modern art is taken to the extremes.
Flowers, animals, saints and nativity scenes are all carved from local radishes and the central square is filled with stalls.
Music and traditional Mexican dancing take place, along with pinata before a huge fireworks finishes the event with a bang.
The governor of the town judges the radish carving but there are plenty of other dishes on offer for hungry visitors.
Deep-fried doughnuts drenched in syrup, known locally as bunuelos, are a speciality of the event and visitors are encouraged to follow the local traditions associated with eating them.
Rather than return your plate, visitors are encouraged to throw it over their shoulder and the number of pieces it breaks into represents the amount of good luck on your way in the next year.
The festival takes place on December 23rd at Oaxaca in Mexico and is a unique example of central America's cultural entertainment.
