Tailor Made Holidays in Nicaragua: Highlights

An adventure down the Rio San Juan

The impressive Rio San Juan links Lake Nicaragua with the Caribbean and acts as the border with Costa Rica. For the more adventurous who don’t mind basic accommodation and want to get truly off the beaten track this beautiful river offers a fascinating insight into Nicaragua’s past and its culture. For wildlife enthusiasts the Indio Maiz Biological Reserve (one of the largest protected areas of pristine primary forest in Central America) can also be visited. The river is also a very scenic and beautiful overland border crossing linking Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

The crater of this active volcano is accessible by road, meaning you can get right to the volcanic rim and peer down into the crater where thunderous lava flows below. The surrounding area is incredibly fertile, giving life to a range of flora and fauna. Pretty market towns and beautiful volcanic crater lakes can also be explored in the area and make for a great day trip from Granada.

Tranquillity, arts and crafts on the Solentiname Islands

This idyllic archipelago is made up of four main islands and a scattering of small uninhabited islets which are a haven for birdlife. The islands are well known for the small, tightly knit community of talented artisans whose skill and talent is passed down through the generations. The beauty of the islands is captivating and it is also a wonderful place to relax in peace and quiet if you really want to get away from it all and other tourists! They combine particularly well with the Rio San Juan.

Explore Nicaragua's volcanoes

The volcanic peaks and craters of Nicaragua are fascinating. Many of the towns and villages have been destroyed by eruptions over the centuries and several of Nicaragua’s volcanoes, particularly the Masaya volcano, remain active, spewing gas and ash into the air. Others, such as Maderas volcano, cradle spectacular crater lakes. They not only provide a stunning and distinctive landscape but are also havens for wildlife: explore them on foot, by horse, or simply admire their beauty from afar.
