The Indio Maiz Biological Reserve protects more than 600 species of tropical birds and 200 species of mammals spread over a million hectares of land, set on the banks of the Rio San Juan, in the southeast of the country near the Costa Rican border. This is an ultimate destination for adventurous travellers looking to explore one of Nicaragua’s least-known and little-visited regions. This area is by far the best place to observe wildlife in Nicaragua but accommodation is basic at best. We are closely monitoring any new eco-lodge developments.
