  • Wildlife & Nature

Within the Sierra del Rosario at Soroa, is the orquideario, or orchid garden. This garden is the largest in Cuba and covers an area of 35,000 square metres on a steep hillside.

There are more than 20,000 plants of 700 orchid species grown here, along with other ornamentals, amidst limestone formations, palms, and towering semi-deciduous trees draped in vines. Soroa also has thousands of specimens of ferns and trees which contribute to the biodiversity of the region - it has been designated a World Biosphere Reserve.

The first species of orchids were introduced to Soroa in 1948 by a wealthy Spaniard, Tomás Felipe Camacho, and the garden still maintains valuable specimens from the 19th and 20th centuries. There is also a lovely waterfall with walking trails branching off from it and should you wish there is an opportunity to walk 2.5km to the top of a mountaintop mirador (lookout), as there are spectacular views in every direction.
