Day by Day

Day 1Managua

On arrival at Managua airport you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel.

Day 2Managua

This morning take in Nicaragua's capital Managua, which has a fascinating and turbulent history. The afternoon is free to relax.

Day 3Managua - San Carlos - El Castillo

Transferred to Managua airport for your light aircraft flight across Lake Nicaragua to the bustling river port of San Carlos. You will be met at the airstrip at San Carlos and will have time to explore the towns bustling markets or have some refreshments at a local restaurant before you travel down the beautiful Rio San Juan to El Castillo. Enjoy lunch on arrival and then a tour of the impressive fortress. This evening travel with one of the expert local guides to look for Caiman on the river by torchlight.

Day 4El Castillo

This morning travel down river to the Rio Bartola, a small tributary of the Rio San Juan. Enjoy a guided walk through the tropical primary forest of the Indio Maiz Biological Reserve with your guide where you can expect to see a range of birds, insects, poison dart frogs, troops of howler monkeys and a range of marine life in the river. After the excursion you return to El Castillo.

Day 5El Castillo - Solentiname Islands

Travel back up the Rio San Juan to San Carlos. Here you will meet your guide from the Solentiname Islands who will take you by boat from the river out into Lake Nicaragua and to the islands. Visit some of the islands in the archipelago, meeting the skilled artisans and watching them work. You will also have an insight into the islands history which were used as a base by the Sandinistas to plan the countries revolution in the 1970's.

Day 6Solentiname Islands

This morning travel by boat across the lake to the southern shore, close to the Costa Rican border. Enjoy a slow cruise through the tranquil, narrow streams filled with birdlife before reaching the ranger station, where you can enjoy a choice of trails and activities before returning to the islands.

Day 7Solentiname Islands - San Carlos - Managua - León

This morning after breakfast you travel back to San Carlos by boat. You will then travel by car to the airstrip to catch your light aircraft flight back to Managua. You will then be transferred north along the hot western coastal plains to the crumbling colonial city of Leon. Along the way stop to take in the ruins of Leon Viejo (Old Leon), the original site of the city.

Day 8León

Enjoy an excursion taking in the beautiful city of Leon today. I suggest asking your guides to do the tour in the afternoon, as the light at this time is beautiful and it is an ideal time for photography.

Day 9León

Today you will be driven to a remote part of the Nicaraguan Pacific coast and the small fishing town of Suyapa. From here your guide will accompany you with some local fisherman down a sheltered river and lagoon protected from the ocean by a long thin sandbar known as Juan Venado Island. Expect to see plenty of bird life, deserted beaches and enjoy a delicious seafood lunch at a beachside restaurant in Suyapa before returning to Leon.

Day 10León - Matagalpa

You will be driven north out of Leon to the boiling San Jacinto mud pots for a short visit before continuing to the cooler, mountainous region surrounding the bustling town Matagalpa and Selva Negra.

Day 11Matagalpa

Enjoy a relaxed introduction to the estate with one of Selva Negra's owners. Take in the lovely scenery, coffee plantations and a variety of other produce this organic estate produces. You will have plenty of free time for other activities such as birding and walking.

Day 12Matagalpa - Granada

Your guide and driver will drive you south to Granada on the shores of Lake Nicaragua. On the way stop and take in the impressive crater of the Masaya Volcano and visit one of the many artisan Chorotega villages in this fascinating region, the heartlands of Nicaragua.

Day 13Granada

This morning take in Granada, its main square and beautifully restored cathedral before enjoying a boat cruise around 'Las Isletas', small islands though to have been formed by a volcanic eruption.

Day 14Granada

Enjoy a steep 4WD ascent of Volcan Mombacho. Take in the visitors centre at the summit and enjoy a lovely walk around the crater with impressive views of Granada, Las Isletas and the lake.

Day 15Granada - Morgans Rock

Today you will be driven south through the province of Rivas to the Pacific Coast and Morgan's Rock. All meals included in your stay.

Day at leisure at Morgans Rock.

Day 17Morgans Rock

Day at leisure at Morgans Rock.

Day 18Morgans Rock

Today you will be transferred back to Managua for your onward flight.
