Tailor Made Holidays in India: India's Wildlife

Royal Bengal Tiger

On safari in India

India’s diverse landscapes and varied climate are reflected in the many national parks that support a range of indigenous and migratory species. Although far removed from the better-publicised African safaris, India’s national parks, many former hunting grounds for the Maharajas, offer a unique experience.

The elusive tiger is top of most people’s spotting list but there are many other mammals, reptiles and vivid birds for the wildlife enthusiast. You can view game from a coracle, watch crocodiles, take a night drive, view prey and predator from elephant back, or watch birds from a cycle rickshaw. The regal legacy provides a backdrop of ruined forts and royal hunting lodges, while luxury resorts and jungle camps complement the wildlife experience.

Seeing tigers in India is an incredible experience but unfortunately sightings can’t be guaranteed. The local guides will do their best to ensure that every game drive is a unique event and the multitude of prey animals, birds and monkeys will keep the keenest eye busy. To improve the chances of seeing tigers spend a few days in the parks, take binoculars, wear dark clothes and follow the instructions of your wildlife guide.

When to Travel

The majority of parks are open from around October to June. The best time for spotting game in India is during the hotter months of March and April before the monsoon season when foliage is less dense and animals concentrate around the shrinking waterholes. The months of November to February still offer a pleasant climate and the lush vegetation attracts a myriad of bird species.
