Elephants take part in Indian ceremony: 01-04-2008
The Nenmara Vallangi Vela festival in India is a once in a lifetime opportunity for animal lovers to get a different look at nature.
Taking place at the Nellikulangara Bhagavathy temple in Palakkad, the festival involves one of India's most famous animals - the elephant.
30 elephants - known as the Vela - line up under decorated canopies and perform a parade celebrated to highlight the meeting of the deities of the Nenmara Bhagavathy temple and the Vallangi Siva temple
The event is popular with locals from neighbouring villages who come to see the parade, but visitors are welcome and can also expect to see a traditional flag hoisting ceremony - known as Kodiyettam - which marks the beginning of the festival.
