Our Lady of Candelaria: 31-01-2008

The Christian festival of the Feast of Our Lady of Candelaria takes place in Goa every year and people of all religions and cultures come together to celebrate the event in the district of Pomburpa.
Candles are lit in honour of Candelaria and those attending the festival prepare many sweet rice dishes known as Sannas as well as many other items.
Many state churches and temples can be found in Goa giving travellers the opportunity to visit the region and see all the religions that are practiced by the multi-cultural society.
The Christian roots of Goa date back to the Portuguese occupation of the mid-1500s.
Along with Sanna, travellers will find rice and fish curry are very popular dishes in Goa with fish forming the main part of the Goan people's diet.
If travellers still have plenty to do after food and the festival they should visit the World Heritage Site of the Born Jesus Basilica where the remains of St Francis Xavier are held.
