State separation celebrated in Mumbai: 10-04-2008

Mayday in Maharashtra sees celebrations of the day the region gained statehood, becoming one of the largest in India.
Mumbai is the capital city, and Shivaji Park is the place to enjoy the festivities. A ceremonial parade sees the governor of the state roam through the park along with members of the police, Brihanmumbai Commando Force and the fire brigade.
The day has been celebrated since the state was formed in 1960, when the Marathi- and Gujarati-speaking areas were separated.
Bombay then became the capital of both sides before they were divided in 1960.
