Places to See and Stay: Orissa - India

Visit Calcutta and The East

The laid-back state of Orissa has yet to be ‘discovered’ by large numbers of tourists and the tranquil atmosphere provides a pleasant contrast to the frenetic Indian cities. The temples and ancient architecture at Bhubaneswar and Puri are the first ports of call for many and the beautiful Sun Temple at Konark, covered in intricate stone carvings, is one of India’s greatest monuments. However, these man-made structures are only part of Orissa's fascination.

The people themselves are unique in India and the tribal areas around Jeypore are home to a variety of indigenous groups who dwell in the hills and jungles. Weekly markets or haats are held and, with permission, are wonderful photographic experiences, while the tattooed faces of the Kutia Kondh are one of the more recognisable images of the region. Travel in Orissa is mainly on rough roads and the journey can be an adventure in itself but the unique experiences in Orissa more than compensate. For first time or repeat travellers to India, the delicious seafood, impressive temples and the tribal groups of Orissa are sure to provide an intriguing visit.
