Places to See and Stay: Amritsar - India

Visit Foothills of The Himalaya

Golden Temple, Amritsar, India

In the heart of the Punjab, Amritsar is Sikhism’s holiest city. Its name means ‘Pool of the Nectar of Immortality’ and is justly famed for its dazzling Harmandir Sahib or Golden Temple, a sacred shrine gilded with 100 kilograms of gold. This incomparable sight is a joy for pilgrims and tourists alike, especially during the ‘Going to Bed’ ceremony, when the Holy Book is paraded before jostling crowds in a palanquin before being taken to its nightly resting place. Before the ceremony, take a peek into the kitchen where volunteers daily prepare a simple meal for up to 3,000 visitors, encouraging rich and poor, men and women, to join together. Amritsar is well connected by both air and rail, and can be the starting or finishing point of a tour through the Himalayan foothills.
