The Bangala, a Tamil pronunciation of 'bungalow', was built by a Chettiar trader over 70 years ago and remains the family home. Mrs Meyyappan, the current family head, usually presides over meals, a fantastic introduction to the renowned cuisine of the Chettinad region. The 12 guest rooms are simple, comfortable and well-maintained, with antique furnishings and old family photographs adorning the walls. Guests are assured of a warm welcome and have the privilege of being shown around local mansions not usually open to the public. The Bangala is also a great base for exploring Karaikudi and surrounding villages, where you can visit the local markets, antique bazaar and craft workshops.
