Srirangapatnam is situated on an island in the Cauvery River approximately 12 kilometres from Mysore. This historic site dates back to the 10th century although it was not until the 18th century that Tipu Sultan succeeded his father, Haidar Ali, and adopted it as his capital. It was here that he fought to his death during a bloody battle against the British led by Colonel Wellesley, who later became the Duke of Wellington. Although some of the sites require imagination, Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace is still intact, complete with many artefacts and original frescoes.
