Audley in Kerala
Laid-back Kerala, with its pretty inland canals and lakes, is a tropical land inhabited by a warm, welcoming people who ensure that the weariest of travellers unwind and slip into the local rhythm and pace of life.
Activities
Kerala is rightly famous for its lush backwaters, enticing cuisine and languid pace of life but the forested hills and narrow waterways can also be enjoyed by those seeking some gentle activity. Numerous trails provide access to the vast tea plantations that carpet the higher slopes while the more adventurous can venture into the verdant green forests and jungles. The backwaters themselves are most commonly explored by converted rice boats but smaller boats and kayaks are available, allowing access to the hidden corners of this watery world.
Ayurveda
Ayurveda is a traditional holistic approach to the body which aims to eliminate toxins, boost the immune system and assist many other ailments, a practice followed by many Keralites for centuries. The majority of hotels throughout Kerala have a treatment room, but a few resorts are more dedicated and offer specialist procedures. In these we recommend a stay of at least seven nights that include a consultation with a doctor before a course of treatment, tailored to your requirements. For specific ayurvedic treatments or information about dedicated ayurvedic hotels please ask your country specialist for details
Kayaking
The Backwaters are traditionally visited on converted rice boats but they can also be explored in smaller craft. Farms, houses and temples are perched on isolated patches of land above the channels, while a vibrant community inhabits this watery world. Using single or twin kayaks a gentle paddle down the narrowest of channels allows you a glimpse of village life. Day trips or longer journeys are possible with accommodation in simple guesthouses.
Rest and Relaxation
With a stunning coastline and secluded ayurvedic properties, Kerala has many options for those seeking to unwind at the start or end of a journey, but the wildlife, jungles, forests and tranquil backwaters can also be enjoyed by those seeking a little gentle activity.
Walking and Trekking
Kerala is a wonderfully varied walking destination with the rolling tea-covered hills around Munnar providing some of the highest vistas in southern India, while the trails at Periyar pass through open grassland and thick jungles. Walks are available for all levels from single to five day, two centre treks. Wildlife experiences abound and Kerala’s climate supports numerous birds, butterflies and mammals. These rich environments can be explored on day trips or for longer accompanied by a naturalist.
