On This Trip

- Admire the historic havelis in the Shekhavati Region
The northern cities stretching from Varanasi in the east to Agra are home to diverse tribes and sects reflecting the many different religions of India. The sacred Ganges draws holy men, known as sadhus to its banks and nearby Sarnath is the site of the Buddha’s first sermon. Further west the legacy of legendary Muslim leaders Shah Jehan and Akbar can be seen at Agra and Fatehpur Sikri. Between the two lie Khajuraho, Orchha and Gwalior, each with their own distinct dynasties and legacies.
Extensions
To see more of sacred India, you could take a train or flight to Haridwar and explore nearby Rishikesh where Hindus make pilgrimage to bathe in the purifying Ganges. Alternatively, you could continue southwest from Gwalior to Bundi and Udaipur or Indore and Maheshwar.
