Visit Rajasthan and The North
Though it dates back to the 8th century, most of Gwalior’s huge fort was constructed in the 15th century, a vast complex that encompasses several interesting temples, ruined palaces and the exclusive Scindia boarding school. In its time it has changed hands from the Tomars to Lodhis of Delhi and been ruled by Mughals and Marathas, but although each occupying force left their mark artistically, none changed the imposing ramparts of the fort, with their views over the Indian countryside. Exploring the deserted Man Singh Palace and its subterranean rooms is a definite highlight, as is learning from your guide about the innovative 15th century design features.
