Buddhist Stupa and carbed gateway, Sanchi

One of the most important Buddhist sites in India, Sanchi is a collection of Buddhist stupas, temples and monasteries dating from the 3rd century BC, set on top of a hill and surrounded by shady gardens. The main stupa has been carefully restored and is surrounded by four gates, pointing north, south, east and west. Each gate is covered in carvings depicting dozens of episodes from the Buddha’s life. Completely off the beaten track, Sanchi is a calm and relaxed place best visited from nearby Bhopal.
