Stay in a fort or palace in India
For centuries northern India and Rajasthan in particular was a land of feuding clans, shifting alliances and bloody battles which have left the region perhaps it’s most visible legacy.
The mighty forts clinging to rocky outcrops and ancient battlements seemingly rising from the scorched desert earth are testament to this warring past but not all the ancient monuments are there just to be looked at.
Throughout the region numerous forts and palaces have been converted to guest accommodation allowing visitors the opportunity to live like a king, if only for a few brief days.
Many of these heritage hotels are still owned and run by the historic families and although the accommodation varies considerably in style and standard, they offer a unique experience.
