Ancient monasteries play host to moon light festival: 13-12-2007

Three ancient monasteries play host to the festival of Mani Rimdu in Nepal where Buddhist monks act out an ancient epic tale to the light of the moon.
Masked dancers make their appearances on the courtyard to re-tell the story of Buddhism's triumph over Bon.
A full moon provides the lighting for the drama and the monks wear papier mache masks and woven brocade costumes.
On the opening day of the festival, monks act out elaborate prayer rituals before they tell the story on the second day.
The final day sees throngs of Sherpas from the mountains join the local villagers to party through the night in the Sherpa dance.
Regarded as some of the most religious people in Nepal, the Sherpas originally descended from Tibetans who made long and tiring trips across the Himalayas and they are very respected.
Nepalese cuisine is quite diverse and lentil soup, served with vegetables and rice is very popular.
Cumin, sesame seeds, tumeric, ginger and cinnamon are used in the cooking and the best food is often served during the festivals.
