One-horned rhino numbers increase in Nepal: 25-03-2008

Travellers visiting Nepal now have a better chance of seeing the country's one-horned rhinoceros, as numbers of the animal are increasing in protected national parks.
According to a recent census of the animal population in the
Chitwan National Park, 480 of the rhinos were spotted in the park.
Shyam Bajimiya, director general of the wildlife conservation department, said: "A total of 480 rhinos were spotted in the national park during a recent census. The number is 36 more than the last census in 2005.
"The teams were able to identify 100 animals as males and 130 as females but the sex of the remaining rhinos could not be established. The team came across a considerable number of young rhinos during the census," he told the DPA.
There had been fears over the future of the animals in Nepal's protected areas but visitors to the Asian country will be pleased to know that numbers of the rare breed are on the rise.
