Indian army to take tourists glacier trekking in Kashmir: 13-09-2007

The strategic Siachen glacier in India has been opened to the public in supervised expeditions carried out with the army.
Siachen is the second longest glacier in the world for non-polar areas at 72 km in length, and is located along the disputed India-Pakistan border in the Himalaya Mountains.
More cordial relations between India and Pakistan have led to the Indian government's decision to open the glacier to tourists. As the glacier is at high altitude, trekkers will first have to acclimatise in Leh for ten days.
They will then receive further training at a base camp in Siachen before setting off on the last leg of the journey.
Mountaineering expeditions have already been allowed on the Pakistani side of the border.
