Pakistan celebrates its 60th birthday: 14-08-2007

Celebrations erupted across the country today as Pakistan celebrated its 60th anniversary of independence.
Following the British colonial withdrawal from south Asia, Pakistan partitioned itself from India, and declared its statehood.
Thirty-one artillery guns were fired in salute in the capital, Islamabad, to mark the start of the day of festivities.
Events included a cadet changing of the guard at the mausoleum of Pakistan's founder Quaid-e-Mohammed Ali Jinnah in Karachi, numerous flag-raising ceremonies and firework displays.
Many of the country's population were also keen to get involved waving miniature green and white flags and setting off firecrackers in celebration.
Britain's prime minister, Gordon Brown, sent a message to Pakistan's prime minister, Shaukat Aziz, saying: "I congratulate this great country, and send my best wishes from the British people. I celebrate the strength of the UK-Pakistan relationship."
Pakistan is known for its lagoons and mangrove swamps in the south and glacier mountains in the north.
