In the far north east of Pakistan, the lush Shigar Valley was once a separate kingdom in the High Karakoram whose original settlers probably arrived from Yarkand in China. The former Raja's timber and stone palace has recently been restored, although the royal descendants now reside in a more modern residence close by. Some Buddhist monastery foundations and rock inscriptions, some dating back to the 5th century, were recently excavated and provide a cultural addition to the raw beauty of the mountain scenery.
