Skeleton found at Godawaya: 18-09-2008

Archaeologists in Sri Lanka have confirmed the discovery of an ancient skeleton at an archaeological site in Ambalantota.

The remains were found in the Godawaya archaeological site and are said to be around 7,000 years old.

Sri Lanka's Sunday Observer newspaper explained that the archaeologists found the skeleton in a burial chamber, with its head pointing north.

It was found alongside several pre-historic stone tools and animal remains in the sand and gravel site.

It is believed that the site could contain both historic and pre-historic artefacts, giving an insight into the country's past.
