Hatton, high up in the hill country, is surrounded by vast tea estates that carpet the rolling hills while to the south east stands the curious pyramidal bulk of Adams peak. The peak itself is a focal point for pilgrims who lit by a procession of candles climb the trail at night, passing shrines and food stalls along the way. On reaching the summit pilgrims wait at the Buddhist temple until the sun rises, when a reverent silence descends. If the weather is clear summiteers are rewarded with an awe-inspiring sunrise over the surrounding mountains, followed soon afterwards by a fascinating spectacle as the mountain casts a perfectly triangular shadow over the clouds below.
