Maldives celebrates Republic Day: 06-11-2007

Every year on November 11th the Maldives celebrate Republic Day, symbolising an important event in the history of the islands.
On the day that much of Europe is remembering those who have died in conflict around the globe, the Maldives celebrates the day in 1968 when it became a republic for the second time.
The islands are usually associated with tranquil and relaxing holidays but there is much excitement on this day, with parades, marches, meetings and other activities.
Men, women and children take part in the preparation of food, decorations and entertainment with folk dances, traditional songs and music.
In 1968 the monarchy ruling over the islands was abolished and replaced by a republic, and the name of the country changed from the Maldive Islands to the Maldives.
