Throughout the Indian subcontinent you will come across many different species of wildlife, the majority of which can be found within official national parks, all of which are protected and therefore thriving within their own natural habitats.

Audley can arrange visits to around 30 protected national parks in the Indian Subcontinent, all with their own particular attractions.

One of the most sought after animals is, of course, the Royal Bengal tiger. There are only around 1,400 tigers remaining in the subcontinent, in parks dotted across India and in Nepal.

Throughout these parks leopard, jackal, wild dog and many varieties of deer can also be spotted, as well as almost 1,300 of the world’s 7,000 species of bird.

India and Nepal are also the only places to find the endangered one-horned rhino - in Kaziranga National Park in north east India there is a thriving population of almost 2,000. In Sri Lanka and south India large herds of wild elephant can be found.

Less well-known is the fact that India not only has the incredible tiger and leopard but in Gujarat another member of the cat family, the Asiatic lion resides and numbers total over 300 in Sasan Gir National Park.
