This well restored 14th century citadel is home to the chief of the Champawats, from the Rathores clan who have recently opened their gates to this magnificent fort to offer traditional Rajasthani hospitality with vibrant colours and service once offered to passing Mughal Emperors.
Pokaran means the place of "five mirages" it stands on the ancient silk route and was a trading place for salt, silks and spices to Persia and beyond. Throughout the building you will see ornamentally carved sandstone, grand turrets, and parapets depicting Rajput and Mughal architecture. Internally you will find an impressive dining room, an in-house museum and the Grand Library.
This is a perfect place to visit Jaisalmer from or stop off at enroute to Jaisalmer from Bikaner or Jodhpur. There are various excursions available such as wildlife safaris where you could see the rare damsel cranes, great Indian bustard, sand grouse and antelopes. They also offer jeep and camel-cart safaris in to the local villages. Or you may just enjoy relaxing and taking in the surroundings.
