Mumbai is India’s most cosmopolitan city and its commercial capital, with a progressive and vibrant atmosphere. It does, however, also retain some signs of its illustrious past with a wonderful collection of British-built Indo-Saracenic and Gothic architecture, such as the Victoria Terminus railway station and the Prince of Wales Museum.
It is also home to the burgeoning Bollywood film industry so you may find yourself dining or dancing alongside glamorous film stars at many of the excellent restaurants the city has to offer. A boat trip to the complex of cave temples dedicated to Shiva on Elephanta Island is a relaxing highlight of any stay in the city.
Mumbai was once one of the most important ports for the East India Company and is a good international access point for those going to Goa, Andhra Pradesh or Karnataka but definitely merits a stay in its own right too.
