The world-famous Palace on Wheels has been operated by the Rajasthan tourist board and Indian railways since 1982. This unique train experience is considered one of the great railway journeys of the world, providing a unique and memorable travel experience, reminiscent of travel during the days of the Raj.
The current Palace on Wheels came to life in its current state in 1991. Major changes were the addition of air-conditioning and adjustments to the meter gauge. The train consists of 14 saloon coaches, two restaurants, a lounge car and four service cars (for staff purposes). Each carriage contains four compartments, which are all en suite with fully functioning shower facilities. A ‘khidmatgar’, or personal attendant, is present in each carriage to attend to your needs and ensure you have a comfortable journey.
The train is the only way to cover such vast distances in such a short space of time, despite a variety of luxury trains on offer the Palace on Wheels is perhaps no longer the most luxurious but certainly offers a memorable experience on Rajasthan.
Departing every Wednesday, over a period of seven nights you will journey to a variety of important cities and territories throughout Rajasthan. The first stop for the ‘Palace on Wheels’ is Jaipur. The ‘Pink City', as it is known, has long been an international gem cutting centre, as well as an important regional government city. The train then moves on to Jaisalmer, which may conjure up images of the Arabian Nights. Its stunning location near the Thar Desert enhances its beauty.
Additional stops on your journey include Ranthambhore National Park, the city of Chittorgarh with its famous Rajput architecture, then Udaipur with the romantic Lake Palace. The final destination is the renowned Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Disembarkation is at Delhi Safdarjung station.
