Train journeys in India

Taking a train journey through India is a great way to see this large and diverse country. Although the standards are lower than on western trains your experience will be far more authentic and fulfilling.

Audley specialist Graeme introduces the luxury trains of India: the Palace on Wheels and the Indian Maharaja.

Taking a train in India is a rewarding experience and a great way to discover this vast country. India's railway platforms are full of life, with 'chai' or tea vendors ready to quench your thirst and aromatic smells from the fresh samosas.

Travelling by local train offers an authentic Indian experience. The trains are often delayed, there are no private cabins and the carriages could be cleaner, but train journeys such as the Darjeeling Mountain Railway offer stunning views and it's a great opportunity to meet the friendly locals.

We recommend combining a luxury train journey as part of a longer itinerary to explore more of India's diversity. The trains are often tiring as so many sites and excursions are included, so time after the train to relax on a Goan beach, Kerala's backwaters or a colonial hill station makes for a more balanced trip.

The Palace on Wheels covers all of Rajasthan's key attractions, while the Indian Maharaja is a week-long journey taking in the classic attractions of Rajasthan and Aurangabad, operating between Mumbai and Delhi.
