    Nepal is often portrayed as an adventure destination, and although this does very much depend on the traveller, the country does seem to have the feeling of adventure in the air! Whether it be river rafting, trekking or elephant-back safaris, Nepal has so much to offer for the more adventurous visitor.

    64 per cent of Nepal is covered by mountains and it has the world's second greatest range of altitude, from the top of Mount Everest (8,850m) to the plains of the Terai at just 100m above sea level. However it is the Himalaya which dominates the country and is the primary attraction.

    The Nepali people are amongst the friendliest in the world. Several diverse ethnic groups make up the population including Limbu, Rai, Newar, Sherpa Tamang and Gurung. Generally Nepalis are laid back and have a relaxed attitude to life; Kathmandu is great to see this diverse population and if you are trekking you are bound to strike up a fantastic relationship with your porters.

  • Temples

    Nepal has numerous and diverse temples. Some of the highlights include the Buddhist Swayambhunath Temple and Bodnath Stupa as well as Pashupatinath, Nepal's most important Hindu Temple, which are all in the Kathmandu Valley. There are also hundreds of smaller temples and stupa in the high Himalaya on trails and passes.

    Nepal really is the world's best trekking destination. From short day walks to staying in basic tea houses, luxury lodges or tents, Nepal has it all and offers some of the greatest mountain scenery on earth. The most popular trekking destinations are around the Annapurna (central Nepal) and Everest (eastern Nepal) regions.

  • Wildlife

    Tiger and rhino are Nepal's most famous mammals and can be found in Chitwan National Park although there are also elephant, leopard, several species of deer, black bear, Himalayan Thar and blue sheep! Nepal also has over 850 bird species so there really is abundant wildlife and Nepal is great for real enthusiasts and those who want to spend just a few days on safari.

Visit Everest, Nepal

Nepal's Everest region is an area of high mountains, Sherpa villages, steep trails, but above all, fantastic scenery. Walking in the region is not easy but the rewards include wonderful mountain scenery, Buddhist monasteries and temples, and the hospitality of the local people.

The accommodation in the Everest region is very basic and it is not possible to book a bed in advance. In some lodges you will be able to have your own room, but in others you will be sharing a dormitory with other trekkers.

The Everest Summit Lodge at Lukla (2,743m) is located right opposite the airport (useful when waiting for your flight to arrive - you can wait in the comfort of your lodge!). Its 17 rooms are spacious and have simple bathrooms with showers with hot and cold running water and western toilets.

The lodge at Mende (3,700m) is perched high on a ridge above the main Tibetan trading route with wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. The 20 rooms all have attached bathrooms with hot and cold running water and wonderful 3 course meals are served in the dining room.

The Everest Summit Lodge at Monjo (2,850m) overlooks the small village and has a backdrop of the Thamserku Himal, a mountain which rises up to about 6,600m. The lodge is decorated in the Tibetan style and the staff are friendly and welcoming and keen to look after you.

Pangboche Lodge (3,985m) is located at the base of the Ama Dablam mountain, often described as one of the most beautiful mountains on earth. The smallest of the Everest Summit Lodges, with only 10 rooms and delicious food served by local staff, and an attractive dining room.

The Everest Summit Lodge at Tashinga (3,450m) has 20 rooms which are quite small but are clean and neat with attached bathrooms with hot and cold running water, showers and western toilets. As in all the lodges, the staff are attentive and friendly and the food is delicious.

Hotel Sherpa Land is a local tea house lodge of a relatively high standard. The rooms are spacious, clean and neat, although are quite bare, but the beds are comfortable with big duvets. It is the best of the local lodges in Namche.
